Jaya Bhaduri was born on 10th April 1948 in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India. She is a Bengali and her parents are Indira and Taroon Kumar Bhaduri. Her father was a journalist.
She completed school from St Joseph’s Convent School in Bhopal and later studied acting at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune.
Jaya Bhaduri married actor Amitabh Bachchan in 1973. They have worked together in movies like Abhimaan, Sholay and Zanjeer. They have two children, Shweta and Abhishek. Her son Abhishek Bachchan is also an actor and is married to actress Aishwarya Rai.
She has been honoured with the Padma Shri and Yash Bharati Samman, apart from many awards for her achievements as an actress in cinema, including the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.
She is a Member of Parliament at the Rajya Sabha and part of the Samajwadi Party.

1963 to 1979 Jaya Bhaduri Bachchan started acting when she was fifteen years old with a Bengali movie called Mahanagar, which was directed by Satyajit Ray. Her performance in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Guddi (1971) was praised. She played a schoolgirl who is infatuated with the movie star Dharamendra.
In 1972 she had releases like Jawani Diwani with Randhir Kapoor, Gulzar’s Parichay which was a remake of The Sound of Music and Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Bawarchi. Anamika (1973) saw her with Sanjeev Kumar and in Zanjeer (1973) she played Amitabh Bachchan’s lover. They were also seen together in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Abhimaan (1973) as a married couple both of whom aspire to be singers and when the wife becomes a bigger success the envy and imbalance that it brings into their relationship. Her part won her the first Filmfare Best Actress Award.

Though the movie did not perform well at the box office, it generated curiosity as it explored an extra marital affair.
